Clean Water for Better Health

In 1998 hurricane Mitch struck Honduras with great damage. In response St Basil the Great Church in Brecksville, Ohio, under the leadership of Father Walt Jenne, established a partnership with the church in San Francisco de la Paz in 2001 to help. The mission work has ranged from building churches, replacing roofs on deteriorated faith community buildings, installing water tanks and the associated infrastructure, as well as installation of water purification systems in local communities. As of this writing, there are active water purification systems operating in 55 communities in the San Francisco de la Paz area. The mission has blessed both the villages in the surrounding area as much as it has blessed the folks who have made the mission to Honduras.

The water purification process in general is accomplished through a combination of filtration, chlorination, and de-chlorination for safe and clean drinking water, absent of the contaminants that cause so many health issues in Honduras. Father Walt retired in August of 2020, and in planning for his retirement, he and the mission leadership team felt it was very important to make sure that the water systems would be sustainable into the future. It would simply be too great a health risk for folks who have adjusted to drinking clean water to go back to unclean water.

As the mission team prayed for an answer to the sustainability issue that was imminent, God provided an answer – perhaps Project Eden would be willing to take over the project and continue support. The two mission teams met and the Project Eden Board of Directors agreed to take over the ongoing needs of the water systems that had been installed by the St Basil mission. This partnership is a natural extension of Project Eden’s work to ensure that nutritional and health needs are met for the communities we serve.
