Covid-19 and Two Back-to-Back Hurricanes Create Challenges in Honduras

November 20, 2020 – It has been a difficult year in the U.S. and around the globe due to Covid-19. Honduras has not been spared and the area around San Francisco de la Paz has been hit hard.  The government of Honduras was quick to shut down schools and businesses, however, the consequence to that has been worsening poverty, increased food insecurity, and other hardships for the people.  With very limited testing, it is difficult to know accurate numbers of cases, but hospitals have been full and deaths due to presumed Covid-19 are significant.

Project Eden has been instrumental in responding to the sudden increase in need. Some supporters aware of the situation sent funds and made it possible for Project Eden to buy food and bring it to villages in need. To date, November 19, 2020, our Team has delivered bags of food to more than 1,500 families in the more remote villages of the region, serving more than 10,000 people!

But this need is ongoing as the area struggles with the flooding and damage of the two recent hurricanes, the spread of infection, and the continuing shut downs. This triple disaster makes it impossible for many families to work and afford food. Project Eden staff has also been getting donated food from Food For The Poor to deliver. Much more is needed to help address continued food insecurity.

Access to clean water is critical to good health. Within the past year, Project Eden has taken on responsibility for maintaining water filtration units in 58 locations in the rural communities. Project Eden responded to a drought-related lack of water by also delivering water where needed. The need for clean water is even greater following the hurricanes, as many town and village water systems have been compromised by broken pipes and flood water infiltration.

We need your help now, more than ever, to meet the immediate and ongoing need for food and water.   We hope you will consider a donation to support the important work of easing the burden of poverty.  We look forward to the day when we can resume the regular activities of Project Eden and Adelante, working to improve nutrition, health, and education in San Francisco de la Paz. Please pray for the people of Honduras and of the world as we all do our best to cope with the pandemic.

May God bless you and keep you safe.
